Skin Care For Scars

Mederma claims to be the #1 doctor and pharmacist recommended scar treatment. Mederma is used to help reduce the appearance of scars  and soften and smooth your skin. Let’s find out if Mederma has what it takes to get rid of your unsightly acne scars.

Is Meladerm Effective?

Mederma is made up of a patented, proprietary blend of of botanical extracts called Cepalin®. It helps to soften hardened scar tissue and improve the texture and tone of existing acne scars. Cepalin® is simply onion extract. Onion extract is a natural antioxidant that inhibits the production of fibroblasts. The fibroblasts form a framework whereupon the skin cells can migrate and fill in the damaged wound. If fibroblasts are faster than the skin cells at replicating than  more scar tissue is formed.

The theory is great but does Meladerm work? Not according to a clinically trial that was performed in 2006. They found no significant chanfe inscar appearance from Mederma, or similar products  compared to a petroleum emoliant. In fact a trial done in 1999 showed that Cepalin® was less effective than petroleum. Onion extract does have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, but it will not significantly reduce the appearance or texture of acne scars.
